So with the launch of the iPhone on Friday the 11th of July at 12:01am (The first country in the world) people have been waiting with baited breath… well… WAIT NO MORE!!!
Except, the plans Vodafone are offering suck, the pricing sucks and, it’s cheaper to buy an iPhone from the USA and import it than it is to buy one here…
GG Vodafone… G G.
A petition has been started HERE for Vodafone to create a pre-pay plan
There has been an immediate backlash, with what seems like thousands of people who are very unhappy.

I have a new keyboard. I took it with me at lunch on Thursday, and a group of people gathered around our restaraunt table to stare, in silence, with their mouths open.
It’s a bluetooth + laser virtual keyboard. It projects the keyboard onto the table in full red laser glory, and then watches for changes in the image to detect key presses. It really works.

I still use my 1st gen ipod nano. The reason: it runs Rockbox.
Rockbox is alternate firmware for a whole lotta players, like the apple ipods. There were many players for a while that had the same architecture, so a group of opensource hackers wrote rockbox to run on the lot. iRivers, Apple, Sandisk, Samsung..
Doom on my ipod nano:
These days, they’ve far exceeded apple’s own firmware. Rockbox has Stephen Hawkings -style menu reading, great for the blind, but also handy for anyone who is too busy/lazy to pull their ipod outta their pocket to read the screen.

I’m in the market for a Bluetooth GPS.
The usage in mind is giving positioning info out to my phone, which in turns relays it to those location services websites. There’s lots out there, and they all seem to be in web2.0 style invite only beta.

The iPhone is coming to NZ on July 11th (Aparently) no word on pricing for NZ yet, but the 8gb and 16gb versions are selling in the USA for $199 and $299USD respectively.
“It’s amazingly zippy,” Jobs said, showing off the highly anticipated encore to the device that melds a mobile phone, iPod media player and Web browser, which will now come in black and white.
We will keep you posted!

Now I don’t know whether to class this as a ’scam’ but it is damn close. It’s hard to tell when dealing with places like Harvey Norman but they certainly do push boundaries and take advantage of people at times.
The gist is that Rod Drury went to pick up a blu-ray player and ended up being talked into buying a $400 HDMI cable as well. Yeah that is not right at all and it is well above the $30 - $40 per cable you can find by shopping around. Clearly Harvey Norman employees are struggling to grasp the concept of digital signals.
So I was feeling good until I got the question = ‘What HDMI cables do you have?’.
Apparently there are HDMI cables and there are HDMI cables. Standard HDMI cables are not rated for HiDef. The super duper cables are $499 sticker ($400 with a glance) and of course you need two. What!?!
I definitely have a problem with spending $400 on a cable, and even worse $800 on two. That really took the gloss off the purchase. How can a cable cost that much? I smell a rat.
Anyhoo, it all installed easily and works well.
Needless to say the responses to the post are pretty standard accusing Harvey Norman of scamming customers and in some repects they are right. It just puts the emphasis of doing your research before purchasing, expecially in places like Harvey Normans.
Our sympathies are with Rod, I say march down there and make the biggest scene possible. If you need company I am keen !
